Attaché: Alex is running very slowly

Updated over 3 months ago

There are 2 main reasons why Attaché Alex can run very slowly:

  • Antivirus software is causing performance issue with Attache Alex.

  • Where the template file used for the documents being sent contains a large graphic file.

See the sections below to troubleshoot the issue.

Antivirus software causing performance issue with Attache Alex

Scenario 1

All anti-virus software contains a component called a"real-time monitor", which scans every file that is read, written to, created, deleted, etc.

This process has the potential to lock onto Attache application executables (most notably the attwinc.exe file) and trigger a “false positive”. Antivirus will then normally remove this file from the location and put it into quarantine.

This is not just a server scanning process. This can also be triggered from a workstation checking the mapped network drive up on the server and can make it difficult to find the offending antivirus application install causing the issue.

Scenario 2

Additional to this, most antivirus applications do a process that is called “scan at run time”. This checks the files as they are open to make sure that they are not infected with a virus.

This process has the potential to cause report viewing issues as well as file locking issues.

Some of the functions inside of Attache require the application to create a “temporary file” that Attache uses for working out the report or a particular function. These files are quickly created, used and then deleted by the application.

The scan on runtime function inside of most antivirus applications see these new files created as part of the running application and try to scan them. If the file has been scanned whilst the application is trying to do the delete function it will create a “dead lock” between the two competing processes. This will usually be the cause of a “Lock retry” issue inside of Attache.

Antivirus Exclusions List

For these reasons, when you run Attaché accounting software on a workstation or server that has anti-virus software installed, we recommend that you exclude the Attaché program and data directories from being scanned by the real-time monitor. See: Files to exclude in my antivirus software for a full list of Anti-virus file exclusions.

Template file used for the documents being sent contains a large graphic file

  • Check the individual folder size of each document being sent out (<Attache_Program_Folder>\Resources\<Company_Name\DOCUMENT\) if a single folder in here is larger than a few MB could be a large image logo file that has been added to the documents being used, making the documents being sent larger than they need to be & causing delays being sent. To fix this in Attaché:

  • Reduce the size of the logo used in your document form (you will need to do this in a graphics program like Microsoft Paint or similar) and save the new logo.

  • Go to Setups, (Customers, Suppliers, Payroll), Forms Designer, <document type>.

  • Choose the Form Code you use and click OK to open Forms designer.

  • Right click on the logo, browse to the new logo file, select it and click OK.

  • Click the Save icon and then close the window.

  • Check the the delivery queue manager to see if it is going faster now.
